In the United States, the highest recognition or award that the president can grant is the Presidential Medal of Freedom. This medal is awarded to people who have significantly contributed to security, national interests, world peace and culture.

This time, Emilio and Gloria Estefan joined the large group of personalities honored with the Medal of Freedom, among whom were Steven Spielberg, Barbra Streisand, Meryl Streep, and other 13 celebrities.

President Barack Obama honored different personalities who belong to the worlds of arts, sports, politics and sciences in a splendid ceremony at the White House. In this opportunity, the only awarded Latinos were Gloria and Emilio Estefan. It was the perfect occasion to stand up for the Hispanic influence in the United States at a time in which the political debate has been heatedly revolving around immigrants.

Emilio Estefan did not miss the opportunity to say a few words in honor of the many immigrants who have contributed to the United States:

“It’s the best way to show the world that we, Latinos, have come to contribute to the United States, that we love and respect this country, but that, at the same time, we are proud to be Latino.”

This talented producer, who is behind the “We Are All Mexican” project, has gathered several Latino artists and personalities in order to reply the anti-immigrant expressions arisen after presidential Republican candidate Donald Trump’s statements.

Gloria, Emilio’s wife and talented singer, took the microphone as well to send the following message:

“Those who can vote, vote. We need our voices to be heard by the government, and that is the best way to do it.”
