Google, Ebay, Intel and Kraft are successful companies with at least one founder who was an immigrant or child of an immigrant, but there is much more.
In 2010, more than 40% of the Fortune 500 companies were founded by immigrants, around 90 companies, were founded by immigrants, an 114 companies were founded by their descendants.
According to the report of the Partnership for a New American Economy (read the copy of the report here), 2 of 5 companies have a foreign founder, and from 1850 to the present the participation of immigrants in the US economy has increased 10.5%
The impact of these immigrant businesses is shown in the revenue generated, is greater than the GDP (gross domestic product) of each country in the world outside the US, with two exceptions: China and Japan.
Since 2010, these companies generated 1,700 billion $ in annual revenue and employed nearly 10 million workers worldwide. These companies are: AT & T, Verizon, Procter & Gamble, Pfizer, Comcast, Intel, Merck, DuPont, Google , Cigna, Sun Microsystems, United States Steel, Qualcomm, eBay, Nordstrom, and Yahoo!
But the list is longer than that, the area of Consumer Products include: Sara Lee, RadiosShack, Colgate-Palmolive.
Aerospace companies: United Technologies, ITT and General Dynamics are on the list. In the Energy sector: PPG Industries, Exelon, Celanese, Ameren, among others.
In the Electronic sector, besides Sun Microsystems the list mention: Avnet, Synnex, Emerson Electric CA, General Cable, Ingram Micro and Pitney Bowes.
The most prolific companies related to Insurance founded by immigrant are: WellCare Health Plans, Chubb, Genworth Financial and Health, Biogen Idec, Omnicare, Henry Schein.
The construction and manufacturing sector is not far behind and companies as Fluor, Eaton, Masco are part of this list of companies founded by immigrants who have been very successful.
The financial companies such as US Bancorp, Capital One Financial, Regions Financial and Goldman Sachs Group are seen in the list.
In the Communications and Internet area, besides the giants Google, Intel, eBay, AT & T, & Yahoo, companies as Sanmina- SCI, Advanced Micro Devices and News Corporation are part of this count.
Steve Jobs, the co-founder of Apple, is a son of an immigrant from Syria. Walt Disney was the son of a Canadian immigrant. The founders of Oracle come from Russia and Iran. IBM and Boeing come from Germany, Clorox & 3M from Canada and Home Depot has a Russian origin.
According to Regional Economic Models, Inc, an expansion of the high-skilled visa program could create an estimated 1.3 million new jobs in the U.S. by 2045.
In an effort to promote start-ups and create jobs in the United States, USCIS has initiatives directed at entrepreneurs.
Entrepreneurs may obtain an employment-based second preference (EB-2) immigrant visa if they satisfy the existing requirements, and also may qualify for a National Interest Waiver under the EB-2 immigrant visa category if they can demonstrate that their business endeavours will be in the interest of the United States.
